The weakness and porosity in our student unionism has come to its peak as they can no longer see further in defending the right of the students that voted them in. Compromise and self-contentedness will never leave them as what they want is what I call “make I first chop my own". A post for another day.

Sequel to the recent hike in photocopy price the students will never stop asking the question; “do we have a working SUG”?  The SUG has given a deaf ear to this neck-cutting price because of some benefits they get from this people. The SUG executives do not pay for photocopy no matter how many copies are involved. Each photocopy stand in parliament pays twenty thousand naira (N20, 000) per year which is five (5) times lesser than what business centers pay at back-gate…fair price, considering the fact that they do not pay electricity bill and they also have more customers (students).

In an interview with some of the SUG executives “P.R.O in person of comrade Chisom and welfare Comr. Collins” they said, they had met with the owners of the photocopy stands who explained that the increment was as a result of the high cost of paper and turner. They finally agreed at a price of Ten Naira per photocopy and three (3) copies for twenty Naira.

Notwithstanding, it is only the faculty of science executives,  Comr. Wisdom Barida lead administration with the help of their dean, Prof. Pepple Omubo that has been able to do what other faculties, even the so called SUG couldn’t do.

In a meeting held yesterday with the traders association, the president of the faculty briefed them and gave them reasons why his administration would not tolerate any act to short-change students. He said “anyone who goes against the stipulated price of #5 per photocopy, #10 for urination and #20 for defecation would be dealt with in accordance with the law that governs the faculty.
This is what I call “A slap in the face” of the Student Union Government and I wish the SUG and other faculty bodies can  take a bold step by deliberating with all the photocopy stand owners to adopt the same price.

ANALYSIS:

In a rim of A4 paper there are 500 sheets and it is sold for a thousand Naira (#1000).

#10 X 500= #5000.

#5000-#1000= #4000.

Gross Profit: #4000 (Over 300% profits)

Do you know these persons photocopy more than 500 sheets a day but still charge #10 while outside the four walls of this campus precisely at back-gate some photocopy #5, when they are running on generator and even as low as 3 copies for #10 when there is power supply. Moreover, Back-gate pays electricity Bill, Environmental levies, Diobu shop owner association levy and shop rent of #180,000 per year and still charge #5. Inside campus they only pay shop rent of #20,000 per year while all these other levies are either subsidized or in-existent…oh what a great CHEAT on the students.

I’m angry because the so called SUG is a DEPENDENT body that is spoon-fed. Students welfare is not been taken seriously.  It’s high time we take a stand by knowing our right and standing by our word and also let the “LION” that has become a sleeping “DOG” called SUG, awake and know it is an independent body in decision making and enforcement.

ALUTA!!! CONTINUA!!!!

VICTORIA!!!! ACERTA!!!!

  1. Oh yes..this is the only way forward, when Nigerians see black and say black, and white, white. Our SUG must be a working one to take decisions within the ambit of their power for the betterment of the students.
