DSA Explains Why Lectures Hold During Sug Week

It has always been a controversial issue and a bone of contention whenever the SUG week is approaching, students always complain of their inability to participate fully in the event because of the clash between the SUG week activities and their lectures.

To address this issue from the horses mouth, Gistmeust engaged the Dean of students affairs Dr. Zeb Isaac Obipi in an interview which took place at the kick-off of the VC's Cup 2016 at Goldashe Pitch by Convocation Arena.

Addressing the issue, he stated that by tradition there is a stipulated day during the SUG week that is lecture free and that is the Humanitarian Day(Rag Day), this he explained is because according to the standard of the Nigerian University Council(NUC) there is a specific number of weeks that students are expected to cover before writing their examinations. Any reduction or increment will mean defaulting the NUC standard.

Due to this fact he further explained that the University lacks the power to declare a whole week free, rather some day(s) can be exempted like in the case of the rag day.

He also lamented that a whole week free might also lead to reactions like students travelling out of campus without the notice of the school authority or their guardians exposing them to dangers.

When pressed with the issue of some lecturers not recognizing the week at all by making students do tedious assignments or even tests during the week, he explained that the calendar of events for the SUG week is arranged in such a way that most events fall late in the day giving students opportunity to also balance their academics, as all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

He affirmed that our lecturers are sensitive and would not do anything that will jeopardize the students academics, Thus,  no lecturer will give a test or any form of continuous assessment during the SUG week.
