It was another day of excitement as
the 28th convocation ceremony of the Rivers State University of
Science and Technology draws closer. A convocation lecture was presented
by
PROF. WILLIE OKOWA (Professor of Economics)Titled: Science And Technology In The Post Oil Development Of Rivers State: The Place of Rivers State University Of Science And Technology.
The lecture was presented after
an opening prayer was administered by the Registrar Mrs. Daba Constance
Odimabo, University Anthem by RSUST mass choir and the congregation, opening
remark by the chairman Prof. Joseph A. Ajienka, welcome address by the AG. Vice
chancellor Prof. Blessing Didia, remarks
by the Pro. Chancellor and chairman governing council, citation on guest
speaker by the chairman of the convocation lecture sub-committee, followed by
the convocation lecture proper.
The lecture started with a brief
introduction where the seven sections of the lecture were outlined as follows:
THE
INTRODUCTION
THE CONCEPT OF DEVELOPMENT. Where Millennium goals and targets were his
main focus.
ACHIEVING
DEVELOPMENT: GENERAL PRINCIPLE. In this section, the likes of Sir Arthur Lewis the first and only black Nobel laureate in Economics and a leading Development
Economist of the 20th century identified three critical proximate
determinants of Economic growth and development.
ACHIEVING
DEVELOPMENT IN RIVERS STATE IN THE CONTEXT OF THE NIGERIAN REALITY. Here he
pointed out the right to manage and control ones environment is a guaranteed
right with a true Federal system.
POST-OIL
DEVELOPMENT OF RIVERS STATE which includes (i) The need to institutionalize a
true fiscal federation for the country (ii) The need to reduce leakages from
the government purse particularly in terms of strengthening the war against
corruption, etc.
SCIENCE
AND TECHNOLOGY IN OUR LIVES; THE PLACE OF RIVERS STATE UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND
TECHNOLOGY. In this aspect, He pointed out the three key functions of the University
which are Research, Teaching and Community service. He also laid emphasis on
human capital development, fabrication of simple tools and machinery,
refocusing on relevant research, and entrepreneurial education.
The seventh was the concluding remarks by Prof. Willie Okowa
Furthermore, were the
presentations of lecture Monograph and gifts to the Ag. Vice Chancellor by the
school Registrar Mrs. Constance Odimabo, followed by remarks by the Special Guest
of Honour and the Honourable Commissioner of Education Rivers State Prof.
Kaniye Ebeku whom was duly represented.
Vote of thanks was taken by the Chairman
of the Senate Ceremonial Committee and closing prayers by the Acting Bursar Mr.
Kennedy Sam Abraham.
The Convocation Ceremony
continues tomorrow Friday 8th April, 2016 with cultural presentation
by 12 noon at Amphitheatre and a Cocktail Party by 5:00pm at the Vice
Chancellor’s Lodge.
