Backgate – the ugly between beauty and intelligence.
The question “who you be” on campus especially Illaobuchi backgate is now a war between those who belong
to cult group and those who are not. And as such, raised concerns among
students who do not belong as they are intimidated by those who belong.
It is no news that students going through backgate either to
their houses or to school are facing the issue of harassment from these unknown
guys which some students said they came from the Diobu areas and some said they
are students.
Have you ever lost your phone to these group of guys after
leaving campus in broad day-light?
What were people’s reaction?
Meanwhile along this area are lodges/yards where students
stay and this might has resulted to the reason some students attributed this
act to students.
The institution being located around the diobu area (mile 2)
has really turned the said backgate into a nightmare for students. Also, I think
this is also the reason why the university is avoiding to conduct the Student
Union Government election by ballot as aspirants may go in and involve these
groups of persons from the diobu area.
The same backgate is a point of celebration (fighting &
looting) whenever there is a students’ event on campus e.g. Student Union week.
On your way home smiling after you have finished a test in
which you did very well. At that moment when you say goodbye to your dear university
of excellence because you have done well (back gate) i.e. after you have taken
at most ten steps away from the university’s backgate just before getting to Billy close.
Some guys approach you requesting your phone and at that
moment you would want to scream “why should I give you my phone” thinking
people will come to your rescue, then you realized everyone around that area is
used to what happening (everyone will pretend nothing is happening – do not
know if they are scared).
The incident that occurred before me last week was when a male
student was asked to submit his phone and immediately the guy started shouting “why
I go give you my phone – why I go give una my phone”. The next thing that
followed was a rain of beating on the student. I said to myself – it seems this
guy is not aware of what has been happening here. Is he a learner?
If I must bring to your notice, these things only happen
immediately you step your foot away from campus.
The question is: why is it that it does not happen on campus
nor illaobuchi. This means that their sole targets are students.
We therefore call on our e-DSA (Dean of students’ affairs)
and the vice chancellor to help us on this issue.
