Manchester United head coach Jose Mourinho has vowed to mentor Eric Bailly and believes the Ivorian defender can follow the same path of Real Madrid stalwart Raphael Varane.
The Red Devils splashed £30 million on the centre back in the current transfer window, with Bailly joining the Manchester giants from Spanish La Liga side Villarreal.
Bailly played 82 minutes in the club’s 2-0 win at Wigan this past weekend, and Mourinho believes the 22-year-old has the potential to become one of the best around.
“I will give him everything to try to make him better, like I did with other central defenders I’ve had in my hands, like, for example, Varane,” Mourinho is quoted as saying by Sky Sports News.
Varane, who is one of the world’s best defenders today, signed for the UEFA Champions League champions from Lens as an 18-year-old in 2011.
“I will try to make him the best I can. He has shown the potential we saw when we decided to buy him.
Furthermore, Mourinho has asked the fans to be patient in assessing Bailly as he gets use to his surroundings.
“He’s a very young boy coming from a completely different environment, but you could see what he is at this moment,” Mourinho continued.
“This was the first time he has worn a shirt like the Manchester United shirt. He can’t speak English and can only communicate with the ones who are French speakers or Spanish.
“I wanted to give him more minutes because he needs to play more than others. He needs to feel it and start communicating.”
While most were impressed by Bailly’s showing at the DW Stadium, reports in England suggest that Mourinho is actually unsure about the defender.
According to The Times, the former Chelsea boss could now try to bring John Stones to Old Trafford in an attempt to improve his defensive options.
