The Academic Staff Union of Universities, (ASUU) has accused state governments of neglecting universities established by their predecessors.
President of the union, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, who made this declaration on Monday, July 18, also said that many states have failed to fully implement the 2009 agreement in which they participated.
“State governments have been neglecting universities that they established and some state governors are going ahead to establish new ones while those brought to life by their predecessors in office are neglected to rot and die,” Ogunyemi said.
Ogunyemi also mentioned such examples as Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, Niger Delta University and the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso that yet to receive subventions for nine months.
“Why will a state governor say they cannot pay salaries when they have money to travel around,” he quipped.
“The question Nigerians should be asking them is what happened to their security vote?”
“Some state governors said they do not have money to pay salaries but they abandoned some universities to establish another one in the same state.
“Governors of Ondo and Edo States are clear examples. They abandoned the ones they met instead of maintaining them.
“Our union will not hesitate to defend the right of citizens to the right to education guaranteed in the Nigerian Constitution, to avert a looming crisis in the Nigerian university system,” the ASUU leader assured.
