A new record has been set at the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST) as it yesterday conducted a congress election for the Student Union Government after 7years.

The university had always conducted a delegate election under prof. B.B Fakae led administration. The delegate election featured 20 students from each of the seven Faculties of the university summing to a total of 140.

This academic session’s Student Union Election under the leadership of the Ag. Dean of Students’ Affairs Dr. Isaac Zeb-Obipi together with the outgoing executives of the Student Union Government led by Faith Nnaa proposed an e-voting system which will tackle the security fears of the congress election by ballot and also enable every student vote from the comfort of their Faculties, departments, hostels or home during the union’s elections.

The election which lasted for about six (6) hours (kicked off at about 11am and ended at about 5pm) featured network jittering as aluta conscious students stood in the queue at the voting centers across the seven Faculties to vote their leaders, especially the position of the president since it is the most vital position while others were at home facing the same challenge.
Meanwhile students from the Faculty of technical and science education, Engineering and Law complained that they didn’t vote as a result of the slow network.

In an interview with the Dean of students’ Affairs, he said that the school management was glad that the whole process was a success in-spite the challenges in the network and are working hard to make sure there is an improvement in the next SUG election.

We want to say a big thank you to all RSUST student who came out in mass to vote. This is the first time we are trying something of this kind and we have seen the lags. We will make sure that these lags will be at the minimal during the next SUG election.
According to a report by the Cinfores administrator, it shows that about 881 students were trying to vote at a time and this resulted to the temporary jittering of the server.
