The Nigerian University Games
Association (NUGA) is a body which organizes University-level sports events
in Nigeria.
NUGA was founded in 1966 at the
University of Ibadan where it was first held following the first West African University Games (WAUG) in Ibadan in 1965.
In 1970, NUGA became a member of the World Federation of University Games, and in 1974 was a
founding member of the All African University Games Association.
It hosts a bi-annual inter-university
sports competition called the Nigerian University Games and the association has
36 Nigerian Universities as members which includes our prestigious University;
Rivers State University of Science and Technology.
Currently, NUGA has approved fifteen
different sporting events at the University Games which includes Track and field, badminton, basketball, chess, cricket, handball, hockey, judo, soccer, squash, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, and volleyball.
In the past years, members of NUGA who
have participated in the competition has been able to make history and also
make their institutions proud as they say "good name is better than
riches" and I strongly believe that RSUST can do better than any
of these institutions.
The
table below shows the records of some of the institutions who have participated
in the previous NUGA games and their laudable achievements

The
above table shows that RSUST has not done very well in NUGA compared to other
Universities like Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Obafemi Awolowo University and
even our sister University – UNIPORT.
We
have been known to be great exporters of Knowledge and intellect even as our
slogan is to graduate in Character and in
learning besides this, we can also be great harnessers and exporters of
talents in the Sporting world at large because Sports is not just a game but an
event that unites and bring people together.
I think
some of the ways to improve sports in RSUST and to encourage a better
representation in NUGA is through grassroot sports development which
includes
. We as students engaging in the different
sporting activities we find around ourselves not just for exercise or physical
fitness but to develop our skills and talents.
2. Encouraging fellow students to engage and
participate in different sports activities in the school where they find
passion and interest.
3. The school management synergizing with
government through relevant authorities to renovate some of our dilapidated
sports facilities in RSUST.
4. Careful selection of those who represent
the different sports team in the school and those at the hem of affairs.
These
and many more are some of the things that can be done to improve not just the
sports system in RSUST but Sports in Nigeria at large.
I
strongly believe we can add value to the school sports system both individually
and collectively not just to use it as a form of exercise but to create an impact
and bring RSUST to limelight in sports. We are known as the No. 1 E-University
in Nigeria and we can also be the best Sports University in Nigeria.

With all due respect, if this person is telling us all this because of the upcoming elections, then I can confidently inaugurate myself as the director of sports
