Transport fare for the intra campus transportation shuttle at the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt, has been reversed from an impromptu sum of 50 naira to the normal 30 naira usually paid by commuters. This is courtesy of the early intervention of the Students Union Government (SUG) led by its acting President Comr. Faith Nnaa Barighoto.
Our correspondent gathered that the said transport fare was unduly increased yesterday by the Taxi and Bus Drivers in the school without proper consultation with the school management, nor the SUG.
The SUG Presido who pledged to continually protect and promote the welfare of the RSUST students was highly displeased with the action of the transport operators which she maintained was exploitative to the economic welfare of the students and other users in the university community.
The SUG leadership however advised the students against obliging to such illicit charges by the transport operators within the school premises even as she cautioned the transporters to desist from such unnecessary increment as such will no longer be condoned by the SUG.
When contacted, the Director of the University’s motor park said, they applied for an upward review of the transport fare considering the increment and non-availability of the Premium Motor Spirit popularly known as Petrol. He however noted that they were still on the process as the university management was yet to respond to their plea. He therefore condemned the unlawful exploitative tendencies of some drivers who were involved in such behavior and warned that any driver who could not afford to operate within the current fair of 30naira should park the vehicle until the proposal with university management has been finalized.
Meanwhile, normalcy has since returned to the park following the amicable resolution of the matter by the collective efforts of the Students Union Government, the school management through the Dean of students Affairs, Prof. Zeb Isaac Obipi and Management of the University car Park.
It could be recalled that, in the months past, there has been incessant increase in transport fare in the university by drivers who always take advantage of any slight shaking from external environment.
