A mime drama occurred today as some students and occupants of the popular Hostel F and G Male hostel in Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Nkpolu, Port Harcourt resisted the increment of sachet water popularly known as pure water from the usual selling price of 10naira to 15 and 20 naira respectively by hawkers. The incident led to some of the pure water hawkers been ordered out by the students for refusing to sell at the usual price.
Our reporter gathered that many of the students questioned the rational for the increment since a bag of the said sachet water sell for 130naira, and as such, the dealers could still maximize profit at that rate.
They therefore argued that such move was merely exploitative on the students while accusing the hawkers of taking an undue advantage of the current economic hardship in the country to the detriment of the students who live on campus.
The students who also used the medium to express their displeasure over an earlier increment in the price for photocopying of materials which increased from the usual 5naira to 10niara, accused the Students Union Government (SUG) body of not doing enough in addressing and protecting the welfare of the students mainly, those who live on campus. The students therefore insisted that the hawkers has a choice of either selling at the usual rate or stop selling on campus.
Meanwhile, some of the water vendors on the campus who spoke to our reporter maintained that the increase was as a result of the increase on the bag of sachet which hitherto sold for between 100naira and 120, but has since risen to 150naira.
It will be recalled that the price of sachet water within the university and its environs recently increased from 10naira to 20naira for the 50cl. Pack.
