The students union Government of the Rivers State University
of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt now has acting president. She is Comr.
Faith Nnaa Barigboto, is a 400
level student of Medical Laboratory Science in Faculty of Sciences. This is coming
few hours after the indefinite suspension of the former President, Comr. WealthGospel over gross misconduct and financial impropriety. Until her recent appointment,
Comr. Faith was the Vice President of the Student Union Government (SUG). She
was equally the Vice President of the Faculty of Science in the last academic
session.
Meanwhile, the acting Vice Chancellor of the Rivers State
University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt, Prof. Blessing Chimezie
Didia has Okayed the appointment of Comr. Faith Nnaa Barigbote as the acting
President of the Student Union Government. Prof. Didia stated this today in his
office while addressing some students under the aegis of Concerned Students of
RSUST who led a protest to his office where they submitted a copy of a petition
written against the suspended Sug President, Wealth Gospel.
He informed that he
loved the suspended SUG president like a son , given his position as leader of
the students community in the university and as such he mediated and intervened in various
issues pertaining the SUG leadership. He
however maintained that the current decision by the university management was
taken in-order to protect the students of the university. In his own words “We
have been very tolerant with the suspended SUG President, but we noticed that
things only got worse, we found out that the person who was suppose to assist
us in protecting the students was doing other wise and that was how we came to
this resolution ”. He further promised to support the new Nnaa faith
led SUG to enable them succeed.
On his acceptance speech, the acting president, Nnaa Faith
Barigbote promised work for the interest of the students while promising to
carry everyone along.
Also speaking, the Dean of Students Affairs in the
University, Prof. Zeb Isaac Obipi said, the suspension of the SUG President
would have been impeached long time ago had it not been for the tolerance of the
vice chancellor who has been a father to the Students Union Government.
Prof. Zeb equally
noted that the current action was in line with Constitution of the Students
Union Government and it was taken in the best interest of the students
community while assuring that with the new leadership in place, all issues that
threatened the peaceful co-existence of the Students Union in the University and
the general welfare of the student atlarge shall soon be a thing of the past.
The event was attended by both members of the National
Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) the student’s community.
